Features

New features: Grids, columns, remember me, and more.

We've got a bunch of updates for you today.

  • Grids: You can now show a basic grid in the background to help you design your wireframes.  Select View --> Show Grid in the menubar.  You can also adjust the grid spacing to your liking  (View --> Grid spacing).  Check View --> Snap to grid to make widgets conform to the grid while you're moving or resizing them.
  • Columns: We now have support for column-based grids like 960gs.  Go to View --> Show Columns and choose one of the three popular presets (960gs 12 column, 960gs 16 column, or Blueprint) or select View --> Show Columns --> Custom to create your own background columns.
  • Remember me:  You requested a "Remember me" feature to avoid the annoyance of having to enter your password over and over.  It's here.
  • More precise widget sizing and positioning: When you're resizing or moving a widget, you'll now see an overlay with the size or position of the widget.  This should address many of your requests about being able to set the widget size exactly and fine-tuning your wireframes.  If you'd prefer not to see this extra detail, go to the View menu and uncheck  "Show extra info when moving or resizing."
  • More control over snapping behavior: As mentioned above, you can now choose "Snap to grid" but you can now also turn off "Snap to other widgets" (the default snapping behavior) entirely if you don't want to use it (though it's recently improved and we think it's helpful!).  As always, holding down Ctrl on the keyboard while dragging a widget will temporarily turn off all snapping.
  • Shift-arrow to move widgets by 10 pixels: You can now hold down Shift while pressing any of arrow keys on the keyboard to move a widget by 10 pixels instead of 1.
  • Alt/Option-drag to duplicate a widget in place: If you hold down option, then click a widget and drag it, you will duplicate that widget and start dragging the copy.
  • Better page deletion behavior: When you delete a page, we don't scroll all the way to the top of the pages panel anymore.  So this shouldn't be annoying anymore.

Most of these updates are in the new View menu:

Color is here!

Mockingbird is now in color.

You can change the color and font color of your widgets.   Just select a widget, click the "Color" or "Font Color" item in the toolbar, and get coloring.

You can save your own colors by dragging colors from the preview swatch to the empty swatches we've provided for you.  These colors will be saved along with your project.

For your convenience, if a widget has text on a background, the font color will set itself automatically to be legible as you adjust the background color.  For example, if you make your widget black, the font color will change to white.  If you set your own font color, then automatic font color setting gets turned off until you decide to turn it back on.

Here's a quick screencast highlighting your newly granted coloring capabilities:

Updates and more updates

We just pushed out a bunch of fixes and new stuff.  The new stuff includes:

  • Automatic filler text when you add Text Area widgets.  It keeps the filler text until you change it - hopefully this will make it easier to designate text areas in your mockups when you don't want to come up with something brilliant to write in them.
  • Resizable pages panel.  A lot of people with a lot of pages have been asking for this one.  You should now be able to resize the pages panel by hovering your mouse over the bottom edge of the panel, clicking, and dragging up or down.
  • Selecting tabs in tab containers, links in link bars, buttons in button bars, etc.  Just put an asterisk next to the element you want to appear in a selected state.
  • Improved interaction with menu items.  The cursor should change when you hover over a clickable menu item
Let us know if you notice any issues, and hope this makes making mockups easier for you guys.

New feature: Export to PDF or PNG

This was by far our most requested feature, so we're excited to say that you can now export your mockups to a PDF or a zip file of PNGs!  If you load up Mockingbird, you should see an "Export" drop-down in the menubar now.  Click that, and then PDF or PNG to get a nice, crunchy, print-quality local copy of your mockup.  And, as usual, please let us know if you experience any bugs.

We also added two new widgets: a vertical link list and a close button.

Happy holidays!

Mockingbird updates - 11/20/2009

We've made a few small changes and fixes (and some under the hood):

New:
  • Load time improvement: Thanks to Cappuccino's cool image spriting, Mockingbird starts up faster.
  • Cut: Use Command- or Ctrl-X or access cut from the Edit menu.
  • Save As keyboard shortcut: Use Command-Shift-S or Ctrl-Shift-S for "Save as..."
Fixed:
  • Tab order in registration dialog - thanks to those of you who pointed this out!
  • Typing fast in the widget search field now should now work better.
  • Per your requests, some widgets that previously didn't should now accept tabs (lists, vertical navbars, etc.).

Updates to Mockingbird

New:
  • Paste in place: If you paste a widget from one page to another, it will now paste in the same location.  This should help those of you who let us know that you often paste widgets across pages.
  • Forgot password link:  We've finally instituted an aid for the forgetful.   Look for it in the login dialog.  You can also use this link to request a reset if you just want to change your password.
Fixes:
  • Fixes to undo/redo: we've revamped undo/redo, so hopefully things should be working better for you.
  • Various widget fixes: We made updates to sizing and spacing a few widgets and fixed a problem that was causing chart widgets to load at the wrong size.

New feature: Alert when leaving a page with unsaved changes

A few people reported accidentally navigating away from Mockingbird (by pressing the back button or closing a tab) and losing their work.  We just implemented an alert so that you'll be asked if you really, REALLY want to leave the page if you've got unsaved changes.  Probably you do not want to leave the page, in which case you can click "Cancel" and breathe a sigh of relief, crisis averted.

New feature: project deletion

If for some reason you want to get rid of one of your beautiful wireframe creations, you can now delete it from the load dialog.  Just click load, select the project you want to send to wireframing oblivion, and click delete.

Some fixes to clickable previews

We got some feedback asking for clickable previews, which we had thought we had implemented, until we realized, to our horror, that this wasn't working for every widget!  So we just pushed a fix that should now make any linked widget clickable in preview mode.  So if you thought we were just missing this feature - sorry, and be sure to try it out now!
